Music and Mental Health

An article recently penned by our General Director, Maestro Stephen P Brown, and Music Therapist Sarah Michaels, was published by Medium and Thrive Global. Just takes a few minutes to read as it introduces the idea that music and mental health are related. Our new Accessibility Expansion program will help clarify our language and messaging, and even find research and data that highlights just how much live, in-person music actually impacts our mental and emotional well-being.

A while after the isolation restrictions began we decided to bring forward an in-person program by several months, and put part of it online.

Each Weekend Prelude is designed to start your weekends with a musical purpose, exploring topics that directly impact your participation in live music activities as performers, listeners and volunteers.

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day

October 9 is world mental health day.

Participating in live music as performers AND listeners is known to help prevent escalation of many mental health issues, including anxiety, stress, depression, loneliness, and even suicide.

What are you going to do today to participate?

Here are some ideas:

  • Buy concert tickets,
  • Play an instrument,
  • Sing a song on your own,
  • Sing in a group!
  • Or even host your own Front Lawn Mini Concert!

Congratulations, and Thank You!

We are all very proud that our General Director, Maestro Stephen P Brown wins Best Classical Musician (Reader’s Choice) in Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay 2020. Pictured here with Latin Jazz Trumpeter Camila Ferrufino.
